An international open call for young architects to design a 200 m² urban pavilion within a 41,830 m² linear waterfront landscape at the Yongding River node, approximately 350 meters south of the New Shougang Bridge in Shijingshan District, Beijing.
Competition Background
Beijing will host the 30th UIA World Congress of Architects in 2029. Endorsed by the International Union of Architects (UIA), organized by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Planning and Natural Resources, co-organized by the Beijing Institute of Architects, with the Architectural Society of China as advisory institution.
The site lies approximately 350 metres south of the New Shougang Bridge, within the Yongding River corridor and adjacent to Shougang Park and the Winter Olympic legacy landscape. Participants are asked to design an urban pavilion that serves as both a public resting place and a showcase for the 2029 Congress.
The brief encompasses architecture, interior design, landscape integration, ecological resilience, heritage activation, low-carbon reversible construction, and micro-intervention strategies within the linear waterfront context.

Total prize money: €65,000. Prizes are not subject to VAT. All amounts are pre-tax. For winners located within China, the organizer shall withhold and remit relevant taxes. For overseas winners, tax matters shall be handled in accordance with bilateral tax treaties and applicable Chinese tax laws.

Honourable Mention
Honourable nominations and above must additionally submit a digital model for the 2029 UIA Congress digital exhibition. Recommended formats: 3dm, skp, 3ds, fbx, obj, glb (max. 100 MB).
The first-prize winning design proposal and its team shall be granted the commission for further detailed design and implementation refinement of the 200-square-meter individual building, which is defined as a reversable experimental project. The wide-area landscape improvement project covering the surrounding area of 42,000 square meters will be launched separately in accordance with the actual construction schedule. If the landscape improvement project will use or is to be constructed based on the winning scheme, the winning design team will be contacted separately for follow-up cooperation negotiations.
